Who do you worry about the most? Who do you pray for the most? As we focus on others, our companions, our investigators, etc., we look for ways to bless their lives. We are not seeking what they can do for us--for what we feel we are owed. Full-time missionary service is a unique time in your life. Everything from the time you wake up til the time you go to bed is not about you. Even prayer and scripture study are focused on someone else's needs, someone else's questions. Take this opportunity as a full-time missionary to completely "lose your life." The Lord promises that those who do, will find it.

Sometimes we think we are pretty hot stuff. Sometimes we can see that we are better than someone else at x, y and z. So what? King Benjamin lays it out plainly that we are ALL unprofitable servants--that we cost more to the master than we are worth. In Helaman it is clear that the dust of the earth is better than we are. Pride is destructive from top down or bottom up. Sometimes we get all puffed up with our trials and misfortunes--very Mrs Bennet (nobody knows what I suffer with my nerves) if we are not puffed up then what should we be? Humble

We need to seek the will of the Lord not the will of the Insert-Your-Name-Here. Does the Lord want us to be the shade tree or the currant bush? What if we don't want to be the currant bush?

What are we envious of? Talents? Possesions? Dress size? Opportunities?

How do we not be envious of each other?

We don't envy others when we are grateful for our blessings.

Be Nice

Even though Kind sounds positive, how do we become Kind? Let's start by simply Being Nice to our fellow travelers. Even if it means being nice to your companion :) Even if you don't feel like it. Even if you are tired. Even if they are never nice to you. Be Nice.

Charity Suffereth Long

Suffereth long? Sounds awful. No thanks, I'd rather not suffereth at all, or at least make it suffereth short. Sometimes we really do feel we are 'suffering long' and sometimes we really are. What is another way to put this? Instead of 'suffereth long' how about 'patient'

Patient with Yourself

Are you patient with yourself? Do you understand that change and growth are processes, not events? President Hinckley said to "try a little harder," he didn't say "be perfect by tomorrow." President Monson says courage is "trying again tomorrow." Be patient with yourself.

Patient with Your Companion

 

Are you patient with your companion? She's human, too. She's different than you are (surprise!) If you feel you are 'suffereth-ing long' with your companion then continue in patience with her. The Lord is patient with all of us-- we need to be patient with our companions, even if they are annoying, crazy, bossy, whatever. How would the Savior react to your companion?

Pray for the love which allows you to see the good in your companion. Pray for the love that makes weaknesses and mistakes seem small. Pray for the love to make your companion’s joy your own. True Love

True Love



If you were Sherlock Holmes, you would no doubt observe that the date of this post is incorrect.  Today is March something (actually it is March something-else since I wrote that whole first sentence).  But, these are the slides from the Sisters Specialized Training we had on Valentine's Day.  And since we are talking about True Love, we'll keep up the symbolism.

 On Februrary 14th, we had the most wonderful opportunity to meet with all the Sisters of the Great California San Fernando Mission. Thirty-one beautiful missionaries who spend all day, every day, inviting and bringing people unto Christ.  They are wonderful women and I wish you all could meet every one of them.

We took as our our theme, True Love, meaning Charity, the pure love of Christ as defined by Mormon in Moroni 7:45.  We broke it down attribute by attribute and learned how it applies to us as daughters of God, as missionary companions and as missionaries.  We could have stayed for days and days and still only scratched the surface.  As it was, we had only five hours to spend on the one verse, so we had to hustle. 


The format was simple, a few quotes/scriptures and a lot of discussion which means a lot of slides with only topics on them--you'll have to come up with your own discussion.  Each attribute from Mormon is also "translated" into a more modern term.  There are many other words you could use but I tried to focus on those that would be most applicable to the day-to-day life of a missionary.

I started out as one post but it got too long and blogger began to wig (and you might not have brought a lunch and sleeping bag to get through it all).  So each attribute is a blog post--some are really short, others not as short, but all in all not bad for a batch of amateurs.  Anything in RED is what was on the slides, anything in black is just my random thoughts, Green is a link. (Admit it, you were expecting that link to be a rick-roll, weren't you).
